WISDOM TEETH Extraction

What are wisdom teeth?

Avoid problems such as teeth crowding caused by the eruption of wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, serve no apparent function in the mouth and typically emerge between the ages of 15 and 25. Nowadays, humans tend to have narrower jaw sizes, which means that, in some cases, wisdom teeth do not have enough space to emerge properly. As a result, they may remain impacted beneath the gum tissue.

We answer your questions

The eruption of wisdom teeth often causes certain issues in the mouth due to the limited space available in the oral cavity. In some cases, wisdom teeth may emerge without causing any noticeable symptoms, which is the ideal scenario since it suggests no resulting dental problems, such as tooth crowding.

However, it is common for wisdom teeth to cause pain or discomfort in the teeth and gums. The main symptoms associated with wisdom teeth include tooth displacement, crowding, and pain in both the teeth and gums.

For this reason, if you experience any of these symptoms, we recommend assessing your situation to determine how your wisdom teeth will emerge and whether they should be removed before they lead to more significant dental issues.

First, we conduct a thorough examination to determine the position of the wisdom teeth, the direction in which they will emerge, and the potential effects they may have on the rest of the teeth. Once the study is complete, if the results indicate that the wisdom teeth could cause dental problems, the best course of action is to remove them. Otherwise, extraction will not be necessary if they pose no risk to oral health.

If a wisdom teeth extraction is required, we begin by administering local anesthesia before carefully removing the teeth that could lead to complications. After the procedure, we provide the patient with specific guidelines and recommendations to follow during the postoperative recovery period.

When wisdom teeth emerge, they can cause alignment issues, which may lead to complications requiring orthodontic treatment or even surgery. To prevent these problems, it is sometimes advisable to remove wisdom teeth before they cause more significant dental issues.

For this reason, we recommend undergoing a dental examination, during which we will use an oral X-ray to assess whether extraction is necessary.

At David Madrid, a dental clinic in Valencia, we have a team of highly experienced professional dentists who can perform a comprehensive oral study. This allows us to determine whether wisdom teeth need to be treated, helping to prevent more complex dental problems in the future.

Simple Extraction: Performed when the tooth’s crown is fully exposed. In these cases, no incision in the gum is usually required.

Partially Impacted Extraction: Occurs when the crown is partially covered by gum tissue and typically impacted against the adjacent tooth. In these cases, a surgical procedure is necessary to extract the tooth properly.

Fully Impacted Extraction: When the crown is entirely covered by both gum tissue and bone. In these cases, surgery and an osteotomy (bone removal) are required to access and safely remove the tooth.
