GUM GRAFTS

What is a gum graft?

Restore the health of your gums and the aesthetics of your smile through the gum grafting technique.

A gum graft is a treatment that involves a surgical procedure where soft tissue is taken from a donor area and applied to the affected or damaged area. This type of procedure is performed with the goal of restoring both the health and aesthetics of the gums. At David Madrid, a dental clinic in Valencia, we have a team of highly experienced professionals specialized in microsurgery to ensure excellent results and restore the vitality of your smile.

We answer your questions

There are several reasons why this type of treatment may be necessary. Some of the main causes include situations where the gum recedes, exposing the root of the tooth. In such cases, a connective tissue graft is performed to cover the tooth root. This technique is also commonly used to cover the gap left after a tooth extraction and the placement of an implant.

The soft tissue used for a gum graft is composed of keratinized mucosa. Therefore, the soft tissue is taken from the palate or the upper maxillary tuberosity, as these are the areas of the mouth that contain keratinized mucosa.

First, it is essential to conduct a thorough study of the affected area and establish an accurate diagnosis to determine the treatment that best suits the patient's situation. Once the study is complete, the soft tissue will be extracted and placed in the damaged area.

The technique used for a gum graft is microsurgery, which allows us to obtain the necessary tissue and place it in the affected area. During this procedure, we use a technique that amplifies the image, improving the precision of the microsurgery.

As this technique is performed under local anesthesia, the patient can return home on the same day. During the week following the surgery, certain postoperative recommendations should be followed. Some of these instructions include:

  • To reduce inflammation in the area, the patient should take anti-inflammatory medication or apply ice to the affected area.
  • The patient should completely avoid smoking.
  • Maintain proper oral hygiene.
  • After brushing the teeth, the patient should rinse with a chlorhexidine mouthwash during the first few weeks.
  • During the first few days, the patient should follow a soft and cold diet. Gradually, over the following weeks, solid foods that require chewing can be reintroduced.
  • Avoid any impacts or efforts in the affected area.
