Periodontal Maintenance

What is periodontal maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is a very important phase after experiencing gum diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis. It is a process aimed at preventing relapses, removing plaque and tartar, and preserving the health of the supporting dental tissues in the long term.

At David Madrid, a dental clinic in Valencia, we offer regular check-ups tailored to each patient to help control infection and prevent relapses.

We answer your questions

  • Prevents the recurrence of periodontitis.
  • Reduces the risk of tooth loss.
  • Controls inflammation, bleeding, and bad breath.
  • Keeps the tissues around teeth and implants healthy.

Even if you don’t see visible symptoms, periodontitis can progress silently. Without proper maintenance, it can lead to:

  • The recurrence of infection.
  • Bone loss.
  • Tooth extractions.
  • Tooth mobility.
  • Risk to implants (peri-implantitis).

The frequency depends on each patient’s risk. But the recommended schedule is:

  • Every 6 months for low-risk patients.
  • Every 4 months for moderate-risk patients.
  • Every 3 months for high-risk patients or those with a history of advanced periodontitis.
  1. Clinical examination. The condition of the gums, bones, and tooth mobility is assessed.
  2. Plaque and bleeding control.
  3. Deep cleaning. Removal of tartar and bacterial plaque.
  4. Reinforcement of oral hygiene. We teach the patient proper brushing techniques and the use of appropriate interdental tools.
  5. Evaluation of progress. If disease reactivation is detected, prompt action is taken to prevent further damage.
