Curettage

What is dental curettage?

Dental curettage, also known as Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), is a treatment that removes bacterial plaque and tartar accumulated beneath the gum line.

The purpose of curettage is to stop the progression of periodontitis and promote the healing of the tissues.

We answer your questions

Curettage is essential when inflammation does not resolve with conventional dental cleaning. This procedure:

  • Removes bacteria adhered to the tooth root.
  • Reduces the depth of periodontal pockets.
  • Controls gum bleeding and inflammation.
  • Prevents tooth mobility.
  • Improves oral health.

Scaling is performed in multiple sessions (one for each area of the mouth) with local anesthesia to ensure it is painless.

  1. Local anesthesia is applied.
  2. Tartar adhered to the gum is removed using instruments called curettes.
  3. Root planing is done to smooth the tooth surface, making it harder for bacteria to return.
  4. The periodontal pocket is disinfected.

After the treatment, slight inflammation or sensitivity is normal and usually disappears within a few days.

  • When there is moderate or severe periodontitis.
  • When periodontal pockets are deeper than 4 mm.
  • When there is frequent gum bleeding.
  • When there is subgingival tartar buildup that cannot be removed with conventional cleaning.
  • It stops the progression of periodontitis.
  • Restores gum health.
  • Prevents tooth loss.
  • Eliminates bad breath associated with infection.
